Hawai'i Is My Haven: Race and Indigeneity in the Black Pacific

Editura: DUKE UNIV PR

Anul aparitiei: 2021

Hawaiʻi Is My Haven maps the context and contours of Black life in the Hawaiian Islands. This ethnography emerges from a decade of fieldwork with both Hawaiʻi-raised Black locals and Black transplants who moved to the Islands from North America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Nitasha Tamar Sharma highlights the paradox of Hawaiʻi as a multiracial paradise and site of unacknowledged antiBlack racism. While Black culture is ubiquitous here, African-descended people seem invisible. In this formerly sovereign nation structured neither by the US Black/White binary nor the one-drop rule, nonWhite multiracials, including Black Hawaiians and Black Koreans, illustrate the coarticulation and limits of race and the native/settler divide. Despite erasure and racism, nonmilitary Black residents consider Hawaiʻi their haven, describing it as a place to "breathe" that offers the possibility of becoming local. Sharma's analysis of race, indigeneity, and Asian settler colonialism shifts North American debates in Black and Native studies to the Black Pacific. Hawaiʻi Is My Haven illustrates what the Pacific offers members of the African diaspora and how they in turn illuminate ...

Okwui Enwezor and the Art of Curating

Editura: DUKE UNIV PR

Anul aparitiei: 2021

This special issue is dedicated to the memory of Okwui Enwezor (1963-2019), the first African and Black curator and director of documenta11 (2002) and the 56th Venice Biennale (2015). The articles and personal tributes collected here recognize the profound impact left by the Nigerian art historian, curator, poet, and educator who transformed the curatorial present of global exhibitions and anticipated their decolonizing futures. Enwezor created political platforms and artistic manifestos that not only changed the form and function of global exhibitions, but also opened up new ways to align activism with aesthetic practices, performative displays, and curatorial initiatives. Contributors--art historians and critics, curators, and artists--address how Enwezor's approach to the exhibition as a "space of public discourse" intersects with theories of affect, indigeneity, race, queer studies, and feminism. Contributors: David Adjaye, Hoor Al Qasimi, Natasha Becker, Naomi Beckwith, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Jody B. Cutler-Bittner, Jane Chin Davidson, Shane Doyle, Tamar Garb, Kendell Geers, Salah M. The Point Alma Venus Manuscripts

Editura: STANFORD UNIV PR

Anul aparitiei: 2021

The years 1921 to 1927 were the most productive of Robinson Jeffers's career. During this period, he wrote not only many of his most well-known lyric poems but also Tamar , The Tower Beyond Tragedy , Roan Stallion , and The Women at Point Sur --the long poems that first established his reputation as a major American poet. Including an introduction, chronology, and critical afterword, the Point Alma Venus manuscripts presented here gather Jeffers's four unfinished but substantial preliminary attempts at what became The Women at Point Sur , which Jeffers believed was the "most inclusive, and poetically the most intense" of his narrative poems. The Point Alma Venus fragments and versions shed important light on the composition and themes of The Women at Point Sur . Further, they likely predate other key work from this crucial period, making them a necessary context for those who wish to clarify Jeffers's poetic development and to reinterpret his practice of narrative poetry. Ultimately, they call on general and scholarly readers alike to reconsider Jeffers's place in the canon of modern American poetry.

Integration Requirements for Immigrants in Europe: A Legal-Philosophical Inquiry

Editura: HART PUB

Anul aparitiei: 2021

Based on legal-philosophical research, and informed by insights gleaned from empirical case studies, this book sets out three central claims about integration requirements as conditions for attaining increased rights (ie family migration, permanent residency and citizenship) in Europe: (1) That the recent proliferation of these (mandatory) integration requirements is rooted in a shift towards 'individualised' conceptions of integration. (2) That this shift is counterproductive as it creates barriers to participation and inclusion for newcomers (who will most likely permanently settle); and is normatively problematic insofar as it produces status hierarchies between native-born and immigrant citizens. (3) That the remedy for this situation is a firewall that disconnects integration policy from access to rights. The book draws on perspectives on immigrant integration in multiple EU Member States and includes legal and political reactions to the refugee/migrant crisis.

The Women in Jesus's LineThree of the five women in Jesus's line were not born among the Chosen. This is a clear indication that The LORD God chooses without prejudice relative to family origin.Tamar was of use to her father only for his own security and well-being. She suffered abuse at the hands of three of the Chosen, but The Almighty saw in her the tenacity to be numbered among His own. God granted her two sons and entrance into the line of The Messiah.Rahab had a cursed origin and lifestyle. Never-the-less, her courage in giving the Hebrew spies refuge worked to save herself and her family when Israel took Jericho. People still refer to her as a harlot, though she was one of King David's grandmothers.Ruth was grateful that her husband's family went to Moab to escape a famine in Israel. Left a widow, Ruth chose to accompany her mother-in-law home. Yahweh blessed her decisions with a new life, a loving, godly husband, a son, and adoption into the line of The King of Kings.Bathsheba was taken from her husband, a loyal convert to Judaism, by the chosen Israelite king who was neglectful of his commitment to The LORD God. Expanding the Palace of Torah: Orthodoxy and Feminism

Editura: BRANDEIS UNIV PR

Anul aparitiei: 2021

Expanding the Palace of Torah offers a broad philosophical overview of the challenges the women's revolution poses to Orthodox Judaism, as well as Orthodox Judaism's response to those challenges. Writing as an insider--herself an Orthodox Jew--Tamar Ross confronts the radical feminist critique of Judaism as a religion deeply entrenched in patriarchy. Surprisingly, very little work has been done in this area, beyond exploring the leeway for ad hoc solutions to practical problems as they arise on the halakhic plane. In exposing the largely male-focused thrust of the rabbinic tradition and its biblical grounding, she sees this critique as posing a potential threat to the theological heart of traditional Judaism--the belief in divine revelation. This new edition brings this acclaimed and classic text back into print with a new essay by Tamar Ross which examines new developments in feminist thought since the book was first published in 2004.
