For the last 100 years, political science has traditionally concentrated on the publica part of the expression res publica, conceiving this notion as a form of government opposed to, say, monarchy. However, the Ancients and citizens of Renaissance republics were just as attentive to the res part of the expression. The goal of this richly illustrated volume-containing 94 images-is to draw attention to this res, things and affairs that bring people together. The book first focuses on the central role played by the Rialto Bridge in Venice and by the main bridge in Novgorod the Great in the lives of the respective republics. Sistah MC Droppin' Rhymes with a Beat: Rap, Rhetoric and Resistance

For over three decades rap music has served as the lyrical mouthpiece for another disenfranchised segment of the African American society-- young Black women. Although rap has been largely a male dominated genre, Black women have also used it to "drop their rhymes" and articulately channel resistance via their own funky beat. This book outlines the challenges African American women have faced in their collective historic quest to establish and sustain their own voice and ultimately reveals that using lyrics as rhetoric has helped African American women establish and maintain such a voice. This work includes a line by line examination of 260 rap songs performed by six popular female rap/hip hop solo artists: MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, Lil Kim, Missy Elliot and Eve. Additionally 300 young African American females took part in a survey to weigh in on a commonly held perception that black female rappers served as spokeswomen for young African American females. Popular music enthusiasts and hip-hop purists/scholars will find this book gives a new empirical twist on examining black women's postmodern resistance in a genre borne out of resistance.

Kinetics of Hydride Precipitation in Zirconium

The orientation and distribution of hydrides formed in zirconium alloy nuclear fuel cladding can strongly influence material behavior and in particular resistance to crack growth. The hydride microstructure and platelet orientation are crucial to determining cladding failure during mechanical testing. Hydride formation is normally studied by post-facto metallography, performed at room temperature and in the absence of applied stress. This study uses synchrotron radiation to observe in- situ the kinetics of hydride dissolution and precipitation in previously hydrided Zircaloy samples. The experiments allowed the direct observation of hydride dissolution, re- precipitation, and re-orientation, when cooling was performed under load. The solubility limits and the hydride-matrix orientation relationship determined from in-situ experiments were in good agreement with previous conventional bulk post facto examinations. In-situ measurements under stress and at temperature showed a characteristic diffraction signature of reoriented hydrides. The results suggest a threshold stress for hydride reorientation between 75 and 80 MPa for the microstructure / texture studied.
