Shyness and Embarrassment: Perspectives from Social Psychology
Editura: CAMBRIDGE UNIV PR
Anul aparitiei: 2011
The contributors to this volume conceive of shyness and embarrassment as widely shared everyday experiences where social interaction is inhibited by self-consciousness and feelings of discomfort or foolishness. The dominant position within social psychology that these are aspects of social anxiety is attacked and defended. The role of unwelcome self-referential thoughts in the experience of the social emotions is a recurring theme throughout the book. This intuitively compelling notion is critically evaluated in terms of objective self-awareness, social anxiety, and impression management theories. A psychological account of these experiences is important for both theoretical and practical reasons: it advances the study of social processes and contributes to the remediation of extreme shyness and social anxiety. This is the first book that treats shyness and embarrassment together. Previous studies dealt with these experiences in isolation, even though they can be difficult to distinguish both in ordinary language and in psychological theory. The central assumption of this book is that understanding the "social emotions" will only be possible if they are considered together, if they ...

Anaesthesia for Minimally Invasive Surgery
Anul aparitiei: 2010
Minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery is becoming increasingly commonplace, as technology has enabled a minimally invasive approach to be offered as a feasible alternative to conventional open surgery for a number of important surgical procedures. This up-to-date, comprehensive, but concise and practically oriented introduction to the subject will be of value to all anaesthetists with an interest in minimally invasive techniques. It begins by covering the key aspects of basic physiology, moves on to patient preparation and positioning, monitoring, the anaesthetic procedures themselves (including possible complications and contraindications and easy-to-follow 'how to' guides for a number of key procedures) and finally, post-operative pain. Written by a leading expert in the field, from a well-known European centre of excellence, it is essential reading for anaesthetists and intensivists at all levels of expertise.

Political Victory: The Elusive Prize of Military Wars
Editura: TRANSACTION PUBL
Anul aparitiei: 2005
Success in war has always been difficult to measure. What is judged successful by military leaders may not be judged so by political leadership, nor by the wider public, at least in a Western-style democracy. The public is generally inclined to applaud military victory, but it instinctively reserves the right to ask afterwards: Was it really worth it? In Political Victory, Brian Crozier looks at modern wars involving democracies to evaluate victory and defeat by the success or failure of political outcomes.Crozier begins with the two world wars, where in both cases the German aggressor was defeated by three key democracies: the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. In World War I military victory was squandered by treaty terms that led to the advent of Hitler and Nazism. By contrast, the total defeat of Nazism in 1945 left the Western Allies in charge of some two-thirds of Germany's population, thus enabling the victors to convert the vanquished to democracy. Crozier also deals with the break up of empires following World War II, comparing how Britain avoided full-scale war in contrast with France's violent confrontations in Southeast Asia and Algeria.America's involvement ...

Small Mechanics
Editura: MCCLELLAND & STEWART
A radiant collection of new poems from one of Canada's most renowned and well-read poets. The poems in Lorna Crozier's rich and wide-ranging new collection, a modern bestiary and a book of mourning, are both shadowed and illuminated by the passing of time, the small mechanics of the body as it ages, the fine-tuning of what a life becomes when parents and old friends are gone. Brilliantly poised between the mythic and the everyday, the anecdotal and the delicately lyrical, these poems contain the wit, irreverence, and startling imagery for which Crozier is justly celebrated. You'll find Bach and Dostoevsky, a poem that turns into a dog, a religion founded by cats, and wood rats that dance on shingles. These poems turn over the stones of words and find what lies beneath, reminding us why Lorna Crozier is one of Canada's most well-read and commanding voices.

Over the course of a career spanning three decades, Lorna Crozier has become one of Canada's most beloved poets, receiving high acclaim and numerous awards, including the Governor General's Award, the Pat Lowther Poetry Award, and the Canadian Authors Association Award. Now, in this definitive selection of poems, which draws on her eight major collections and includes many of the poems for which she is justly celebrated, Crozier's trademark investigations of family, spirituality, love's fierce attachments, and bereavement and loss have been given a new framework. It represents the best work of an icon of Canadian poetry.
