The Mysteries of Mithra
Editura: MELISSA & DOUG
This is a very detailed review of what is known about the eastern religions which were absorbed into Roman Paganism during the late Republic and Imperial periods. Cumont, who also wrote The Mysteries of Mithra was a Belgian scholar who specialized in the study of ancient religion. Topics include the cults of the Magna Mater, Cyblele, Isis, Astarte, Mithrism and Zoroastrianism, as well as a study of astrology and how it became part of Roman beliefs. Roman Paganism started out as a system of animist beliefs with a simple pantheon of gods and goddesses. Contact with these diverse near-eastern religions added a sophisticated system of ethics, ritual and cosmology and a host of additional deities.

He shows in a striking way how the Oriental faiths broke up the soil and sowed new desires and needs in the hearts of men which only the faith of Christ could satisfy. The book must broaden the conception of his own faith for every reader." The Continent, Chicago: "Mr. Showerman in his introduction to this book makes us acquainted with the career and qualities of its remarkable author, now fast taking rank among the very foremost of our authorities on the study of comparative religion. And what he says of the learning and ability of M. Cumont is abundantly borne out by the substance of the volume which follows. It is a strictly scientific book on a historic phase of the general subject of comparative religion. In the struggle which ensued upon the meeting together at Rome ...
