An Introduction to Scientific Computing: Twelve Computational Projects Solved with MATLAB

Editura: SPRINGER VERLAG GMBH

Anul aparitiei: 2006

This book demonstrates scientific computing by presenting twelve computational projects spanning a broad spectrum of disciplines including Fluid Mechanics, Chemistry, Elasticity, Thermal Science, Computer Aided Design, Signal and Image Processing and more. Each project guides the reader through typical steps of scientific computing, from physical and mathematical description of the problem, to numerical formulation and programming and finally to critical discussion of results. The text teaches practical computational methods which are not usually available in basic textbooks: numerical checking of accuracy or stability, choice of boundary conditions, effective solving of linear systems, comparison to exact solutions and more. Programming techniques such as vectorial programming and memory storage optimization are addressed, and chapter-ending references form a guide for further reading. The final section of each project contains the solutions to proposed exercises and guides the reader in using the MATLAB scripts available online.

An Introduction to Scientific Computing: Twelve Computational Projects Solved with MATLAB

Editura: SPRINGER PG

Anul aparitiei: 2010

Teaching or learning numerical methods in applied mathematics cannot be conceived nowadays without numerical experimentation on computers. There is a vast literature devoted either to theoretical numerical methods or - merical programming of basic algorithms, but there are few texts o?ering a complete discussion of numerical issues involved in the solution of concrete and relatively complex problems. This book is an attempt to ?ll this need. It is our belief that advantages and drawbacks of a numerical method cannot be accounted for without one's experiencing all the steps of scienti?c comp- ing, from physical and mathematical description of the problem to numerical formulation and programming and, ?nally, to critical discussion of numerical results. The book provides twelve computational projects aimed at numerically solving problems selected to cover a broad spectrum of applications, from ?uid mechanics, chemistry, elasticity, thermal science, computer-aided design, signal and image processing, etc. Even though the main volume of this text concerns the numerical analysis of computational methods and their imp- mentation, we have tried to start, when possible, from realistic ...

Functional Neuroanatomy of the Brain

Editura: LINFORD

Anul aparitiei: 2015

"Functional neuroanatomy of the brain" gathers an immense material from different sources (books, papers, works of great neuroanatomists mentioned in the references etc.) and makes a precise and complete synthesis of the structure and functions of the brain, the most complex system in the universe. The book starts with the history of neuroscience, data and ideas referring to soul, mind and brain, the way they have been imagined and conceived by healers, witches and philosophers since old times. On the other hand the book aims at revealing some basic and recent data about mind and brain, making them accessible to students, doctors, psychologists, biologists and all those interested in this vast topic and research field - the brain - who are studying by themselves. The first volume of "Functional neuroanatomy of the brain" has eight chapters, as it follows: HISTORY OF THE BRAIN AND MIND, INTRODUCTION IN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, MEDULLA OBLONGATA (OR BULB), PONS, MIDBRAIN, RETICULAR FORMATION, CEREBELLUM and DIENCEPHALON. The second part presents in nine chapters of detailed information: THE BASAL GANGLIA, LIMBIC LOBE AND LIMBIC SYSTEM, HIPPOCAMPAL FORMATION, AMYGDALA, OLFACTORY SYSTEM, ...

Practical Geometry

Editura: KESSINGER PUB LLC

Anul aparitiei: 2013

Practical Geometry is a guide for applied geometry. The book is an instrument for students of technical colleges and universities, technicians, engineers. The difficulty of the problems increases gradually, in order to offer the reader the possibility to easily follow the solutions. The proposed solutions are exclusively graphical ones, and they are explained step by step. The book begins with the plotting of lines (straight and curve), angles, polygons and also proposes some graphical methods to find the size of several geometric elements. It continues with the plotting of polyhedra (prisms and pyramids) and polyhedra cut by different planes. The next chapter presents the plotting of revolution solids (cylinders, cones, sphere, toroid) and revolution solids cut by planes. The last chapter is dedicated to intersections of solids (cylinders, cones and other solids). The solids and the intersections of solids are projected on different projection planes and also plotted developed. The problems presented on the book are cases currently met in practical technique.

F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Jazz Age. Themes and Strategies in His Short Stories

Editura: GRIN VERLAG

Anul aparitiei: 2016

Diploma Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1, course: 20th Century Literature, language: English, abstract: The present paper tries to capture the very essence of the 20th century in Fitzgerald's universe of fiction, mainly the short one. The first chapter, "20th Century American Short Fiction", picks up three of the best short story writers of the 20th century and their career as professional writers. The aim was to reveal the way the relationship between the reader and the text establishes, how the text is received and what the reader brings to the reading. The second chapter, "The Modern World as Reflected in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Short Stories", introduces the rich context of the Jazz Age (a name Fitzgerald himself invented), a period of wild economic prosperity, cultural flowering and a shaking up of social mores. It was also the defining era of Fitzgerald's life as a writer with jazz playing a significant part in wider cultural changes. Subsections 2.2 to 2.4 are dedicated to the best part of Fitzgerald's career as a writer of most remarkable tales. The final chapter, "Themes in and Critical Views of Fitzgerald's Most Popular Short ...

Vortex Ring Models

Editura: SPRINGER NATURE

Anul aparitiei: 2021

This book offers a guide to understanding models of vortex rings, starting from classical ones (circular vortex filament, Hill and Norbury-Fraenkel inviscid models) to very recent models incorporating viscous effects and realistic shapes of the vortex core. Unconfined and confined viscous vortex rings are described by closed formulae for vorticity, stream function, translational velocity, energy, impulse and circulation. Models are applied to predict the formation number of optimal vortex rings and to describe two-phase vortex ring-like structures generated in internal combustion engines. The book provides a detailed presentation of analytical developments of models, backed up by illustrations and systematic comparisons with results of direct numerical simulations. The book is useful for graduate students in applied mathematics, engineering and physical sciences. It is a useful reference for researchers and practising engineers interested in modelling flows with vortex rings.
