George Sand

Indiana

Editura: Oxford University Press, USA

Anul aparitiei: 2008

The first novel that George Sand wrote without a collaborator, this is not only a vivid romance, but also an impassioned plea for change in the inequitable French marriage laws of the time, and for a new view of women. It tells the story of a beautiful and innocent young woman, married at sixteen to a much older man. She falls in love with her handsome, frivolous neighbor, but discovers too late that his love is quite different from her own. This new translation, the first since 1900, does full justice to the passion and conviction of Sand's writing, and the introduction fully explores the response to Sand in her own time as well as contemporary feminist treatments. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Editura: INDIANA UNIV PR

Anul aparitiei: 1982

Regarded as one of Sand's best novels, Lélia is an important document in the evolution of women's consciousness. Published in 1833, when Sand was 29, it stunned Victorians by advocating the same standard of morality for men and women and by suggesting that both the prostitute and the married woman were slaves to male desire. Sand also questioned monogamy, fidelity, and monastic celibacy. She later made an unsuccessful attempt to revise the book and to expunge its despair and skepticism. Although Sand wrote copiously, until recently only a handful of her books were available in English. This first English translation of Lélia is an excellent rendering, capturing the raptures, the mysticism, and the nineteenth-century flavor ot its eternally fascinating subject.

George Sand's Gabriel

Editura: GREENWOOD PUB GROUP INC

Anul aparitiei: 1992

Gabriel (1839) is a romantic and adventurous play about a woman's struggle for freedom and love. Raised as a Renaissance prince, Gabriel gives up her entitlement and assumes a feminine identity to satisfy the demands of her male lover. A prescient protofeminist dramatic treatment of gender, the play makes a passionate plea for female equality in education and opportunity. Available for the first time in an English translation, the script is supplemented by an introductory essay that examines questions posed by the play with regard to conventional gender representations and how the protagonist contrasts with other cross-dressed heroines, such as Shakespeare's Rosalind in As You Like It . The introduction also recounts George Sand's struggle to get the play accepted for production on the Paris stage, and an appendix examines her 1850s revision, Julia, in which the protagonist's role is greatly diminished. Now available for theatrical production in English, Gabriel, together with the analytical material, also will be of value for women's studies and literary and dramatic courses.

Sand takes the timeless theme of a younger woman in love with an older man to create a romance with a feminist twist. Her vivacious heroine is both the author's ideal of female emancipation and a subtle attack on the other Marianne, the French Republic's convention-bound Muse.

Anul aparitiei: 1977

The Country Waif (Françoise le Champi) is the second of the three pastoral novels which rank along with George Sand's autobiographical writing as her finest work. Although simple in themselves, these tales have behind them much of the complex experience of her extraordinary life. As Mrs. Zimmerman writes in the introduction, they reflect Sand's "youthful romanticism, her later championing of the working classes, and her desire to record in fiction that was both poetic and factual the lives of the people and the region she knew best."Set in the countryside of the author's native province of Berry, The Country Waif tells the story of François, an orphan boy placed in a rural foster home, and Madeline, the miller's wife who befriends him. Sand's contemporary, Turgenev, wrote that it was "in her best manner, simple, true, affecting." The book has been admired by writers as diverse as Willa Cather (she found it "supremely beautiful") and André Malraux, who considered it a masterpiece. As well as examining the setting, language, and narrative mode of the novel, the introduction looks at Sand's life, in part from the feminist perspective, with attention to the sociopolitical background ...

The Countess Von Rudolstadt

Editura: UNIV OF PENNSYLVANIA PR

Anul aparitiei: 2010

The first translation of The Countess von Rudolstadt in more than a century brings to contemporary readers one of George Sand's most ambitious and engaging novels, hailed by many scholars of French literature as her masterpiece. Consuelo, or the Countess von Rudolstadt, born the penniless daughter of a Spanish gypsy, is transformed into an opera star by the great maestro Porpora. Her peregrinations throughout Europe (especially Vienna, Berlin, and the Bohemian forest), become a quest undertaken on a number of levels: as a singer, as a woman, and as an unwilling subject of alienation and oppression. Sand's heroine moves through a mid-eighteenth-century Europe where absolute rulers mingle with Enlightenment philosophers and gender-bending members of secret societies plot moral and political revolution. As the old order breaks down, she undergoes a series of grueling initiations into radically redefined notions of marriage and social organization. In a novel by equal measures philosophical and lurid, nothing is what it seems. Written some fifty years after the French Revolution, the book taps into many of the political and religious currents that contributed to that social ...

From an original review when the book was published in 1870: "Jealousy, or Teverino, one of the best of George Sand's fictions; T. B. Peterson & Brothers, of Philadelphia, have brought out in a faithful and spirited translation, with a memoir of the author by Oliver S. Leland. There is great ideality and high imagination in this most fascinating romance, the actual heroine of which is a country girl, beautiful as an angel and pure as a pearl, possessing such a wondrous power over the birds of creation as we may imagine was Eve's before the fall. The character is most delicately sketched. Teverino himself, drawn with a bolder pencil, is the type of a class of clever people who "can do anything," but are deficient in the perseverance which alone executes the completeness of success. A brace of lovers, LPonce and Sabina, are cleverly designed, and the stout Curé we have met scores of times. It is a delightful book, and one of George Sand's happiest productions. - Daily Times

Anul aparitiei: 2004

A novel of musical life set in the 18th century. The story of Consuelo, a Gypsy singer, and her adventures in Venice, Austria and Bohemia, narrated by the most eminent of French female writers. Sand was a prolific (nearly 60 novels) writer who shocked Paris with her own sexual escapades, but in her writing dealt with the serious issues of her time and was identified with the Romantic literary movement. Sand's strong, independent women characters would win her both the adoration of many other writers (mostly women) and the wrath of many reviewers (mostly men). She and her characters are enthusiastic, outspoken, sententious, with a bold manifesto of women's independence and a legitimate claim to emotional and sexual fulfillment. She was unique in her approach as a woman who refused to trivialize her craft because of her gender. Sand became known more for her eccentric lifestyle and love affairs with famous contemporaries, such as Alfred de Musset and Frederic Chopin, than her career as a writer.

I HAD just been looking long and sadly at Holbein's plowman, and was walking through the fields, musing on rustic life and the destiny of the husbandman. It is certainly tragic for him to spend his days and his strength delving in the jealous earth, that so reluctantly yields up her rich treasures when a morsel of coarse black bread, at the end of the day's work, is the sole reward and profit to be reaped from such arduous toil. The wealth of the soil, the harvests, the fruits, the splendid cattle that grow sleek and fat in the luxuriant grass, are the property of the few, and but instruments of the drudgery and slavery of the many. The man of leisure seldom loves, for their own sake, the fields and meadows, the landscape, or the noble animals which are to be converted into gold for his use. He comes to the country for his health or for change of air, but goes back to town to spend the fruit of his vassal's labor.

Uncle Ethan had a theory that a man's character could be told by the way he sat in a wagon seat. "A mean man sets right plumb in the middle o' the seat, as much as to say, 'Walk, gol darn yeh, who cares?' But a man that sets in one corner o' the seat, much as to say, 'Jump in-cheaper t' ride 'n to walk, ' you can jest tie to." Uncle Ripley was prejudiced in favor of the stranger, therefore, before he came opposite the potato patch, where the old man was "bugging his vines."

Anul aparitiei: 2012

George Sand, the nineteenth-century French feminist and writer (1804-1876), wrote many well-known novels, but her dramatic work, although equally compelling, is much less known to modern audiences. Molière is one of the best plays about a literary figure ever written, and is one of the few dramas about the playwright that isn't limited to a single incident or aspect of his life. Sand absolves Molière of any wrongdoing, while dramatizing the tensions between the man and his much younger wife, Armande Béjart. Sand reflects the French attitude toward Molière by making him almost a secular saint of the dramatic world. Witty, stirring, and full of life, Sand's play is a hidden gem that deserves to be performed anew.

The main character is a 28 year old German widower with three children.
