Jest to trzeci co do ważności czynnik ryzyka związany z obciążeniem chorobami w Azji Poludniowej. W ciągu ostatnich 3 dekad wiele wspólnych wysilków skierowano na badania lokalnych roślin o leczniczych wlaściwościach przeciwnadciśnieniowych. Okolo 75-80% ludności świata stosuje leki ziolowe ze względu na ich lepszą akceptowalnośc z ludzkim cialem i mniejsze skutki uboczne.
