The Viennese Socrates: Karl Popper and the Reconstruction of Progressive Politics examines Karl Popper's attempt to develop a political theory that draws upon Socratic fallibilism and commitment to ethical autonomy while preserving progressive sociological insights and commitment to activism. Philip Benesch argues that Popper's critique of Marxist theory is largely an endeavor to separate its progressive-activist core from its positivist and uncritical-rationalist entanglements. Although he is in no sense an apologist for Popper's commentary on the classical tradition of philosophy, Benesch contends that Popper's philosophical contribution is of classical breadth and significance and that it continues and advances the great conversation that is the substance of the classical tradition.

Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf der Frage, was die Enigma zu einem solchen Mythos werden lie und wie dieser in den modernen Medien verarbeitet wird. Dabei wird zuallererst das Objekt an sich genauer betrachtet: die Enigma. Ihr Aufbau und ihre Funktion werden erläutert, sowie der Erfinder vor- und die Verwendung der Maschine dargestellt. Anschlie end werden die Phasen ihrer Entschlüsselung aufgezeigt, die zuerst im polnischen byro szyfrov_ mit Marian Rejewski begann und in Bletchley Park unter der Federführung von Alan Turing berühmt wurde. Darauf folgt das eigentliche Thema dieser Arbeit: die Mythenbildung rund um die Enigma, die, unknackbare? Maschine, sowie die Darstellung dieser im Museum Bletchley Park, vor allem aber in den modernen Medien, am Beispiel von Robert Harris Roman "Enigma" und dem gleichnamigen, auf dem Roman beruhenden Spielfilm. Abschlie end werden die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung im Fazit zusammen getragen.

Pedagogy and Emotions in English Language Teaching: Exploring Teachers Emotion Labor

Taking a critical approach that considers the role of power, and resistance to power, in teachers' affective lives, Sarah Benesch examines the relationship between English language teaching and emotions in postsecondary classrooms. The exploration takes into account implicit feeling rules that may drive institutional expectations of teacher performance and affect teachers' responses to and decisions about pedagogical matters. Based on interviews with postsecondary English language teachers, the book analyzes ways in which they negotiate tension--theorized as emotion labor-- between feeling rules and teachers' professional training and/or experience, in particularly challenging areas of teaching: high-stakes literacy testing; responding to student writing; plagiarism; and attendance. Discussion of this rich interview data offers an expanded and nuanced understanding of English language teaching, one positing teachers' emotion labor as a framework for theorizing emotions critically and as a tool of teacher agency and resistance.

Inventing the Way of the Samurai examines the development of the 'way of the samurai' - bushido; - which is popularly viewed as a defining element of the Japanese national character and even the 'soul of Japan'. Japan's Castles: Citadels of Modernity in War and Peace

An innovative examination of heritage politics in Japan, showing how castles have been used to re-invent and recapture competing versions of the pre-imperial past and project possibilities for Japan's future. Oleg Benesch and Ran Zwigenberg argue that Japan's modern transformations can be traced through its castles. They examine how castle preservation and reconstruction campaigns served as symbolic ways to assert particular views of the past and were crucial in the making of an idealized premodern history. Castles have been used to craft identities, to create and erase memories, and to symbolically join tradition and modernity. Until 1945, they served as physical and symbolic links between the modern military and the nation's premodern martial heritage. After 1945, castles were cleansed of military elements and transformed into public cultural spaces that celebrated both modernity and the pre-imperial past. What were once signs of military power have become symbols of Japan's idealized peaceful past.
