Grid computing has become a topic of significant interest in the scientific community as a means of enabling application developers to aggregate resources scattered around the globe for solving large-scale scientific problems. This monograph addresses four critical software development aspects for the engineering and execution of applications on parallel and Grid architectures. A new directive-based language called ZEN is proposed for compact specification of wide value ranges of interest for arbitrary application parameters, including problem or machine sizes, array or loop distributions, software libraries, interconnection networks, or target execution machines. Based on the ZEN language, a novel experiment management tool called ZENTURIO is developed for automatic experiment management of large-scale performance and parameter studies on parallel and Grid architectures. Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 1, VU University Amsterdam, language: English, abstract: This study examines the lead-lag patterns on the European markets between returns on portfolios sorted by size. Additionally, we test for two novel factors to explain lead-lag effects - size distribution and market efficiency. A chief separation between countries is established based on stock market development, and lead-lag structures are analyzed in the context of this partition. Country-by-country regressions are employed to prove the leading role of large company returns over small company returns. A measure of the lead-lag effect is developed in the form of the speed of adjustment of small firm returns to large firm returns. A pooled regression is performed in order to shed light over additional determinant factors of lead-lag patterns and a distinct size of lead-lag effects in emerging and advanced economies. Our results show that size is the underlying determinant of large portfolios leading small ones, while there is only partial support to validate that market inefficiencies can cause lead-lag effects. Is There a Difference in the Weather Effect Between Developed and Emerging Markets

The extensive literature on the weather effect fails to converge towards a unique, systematic and robust relationship between the weather and the stock market. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explain the contradictory results in the literature by testing whether stock prices are affected by the weather in a significantly different manner depending on the level of market development and explaining how this difference behaves over time. In order to test for this, city-by-city, pooled and binary regressions are employed using data of 10 developed and 10 emerging countries over the period 1996-2011 by using two different means of seasonal adjustment. The results show that weather has a very small impact on the worldwide stock market returns and that the significance of the weather effect is decreasing over time with a cyclical pattern in terms of its recurrence. In this book, Sarah Rolfe Prodan examines the spiritual poetry of Michelangelo in light of three contexts: the Catholic Reformation movement, Renaissance Augustinianism, and the tradition of Italian religious devotion. Prodan combines a literary, historical, and biographical approach to analyze the mystical constructs and conceits in Michelangelo's poems, thereby deepening our understanding of the artist's spiritual life in the context of Catholic Reform in the mid-sixteenth century. Prodan also demonstrates how Michelangelo's poetry is part of an Augustinian tradition that emphasizes mystical and moral evolution of the self. Examining such elements of early modern devotion as prayer, lauda singing, and the contemplation of religious images, Prodan provides a unique perspective on the subtleties of Michelangelo's approach to life and to art. Throughout, Prodan argues that Michelangelo's art can be more deeply understood when considered together with his poetry, which points to a spirituality that deeply informed all of his production.
